Atmosphere: Living Legends

The year was 1997, I was 11 years old and just beginning to love hip hop music. I then discovered Atmosphere’s debut release, “Overcast” and instantly was a huge fan. The raw and gritty bars by Slug, and beats by Ant got me hooked. It was clear to me at that time that this duo from Minneapolis were gonna be around for a long time.

Atmosphere consists of emcee Slug, and DJ Ant. The duo have been rocking crowds for almost 25 years and don’t show any signs of slowing.

Slug and DJ Ant

Slugs style on the mic is distinct and creative and his lyrical ability is just plain insane. All the while, Ant’s production style is just about as unique as I’ve ever heard. There’s a heavy blues element and all his beats are packed with a ton of emotion. Combining these two artists together creates a hip hop juggernaut that has yet to be toppled. Here’s a few of my favorite songs from the guys.

Whoa!

Rhymesayers Entertainment

Both Slug and Ant were co-founders of one of the biggest independent hip hop labels of all time, Rhymesayers Records. They have signed a litany of very talented artists since their founding in the mid 90’s. I mean seriously, check out their roster of past and present artists. That list is quite impressive. Having survived almost 25 years in a game that chews up and spits out artists all too often is a testament to the work ethic of the whole team, and the quality content they choose to produce.

Atmosphere was, is, and will be, for a long time, a force to be reckoned with in the lyrical hip hop world. Let’s wait and see what more is to come from the living legends themselves.

We would love to hear from you about what you guys think about Atmosphere or any other lyrical hip hop in general on our social media. Please feel free to share this or any of our stories so we can take this lyrical rap music and dominate the hip hop universe with quality music!
